Introduction to Frankfurt - Northend
The Northend is the most populous of Frankfurt's outlying districts, boasting a diverse population of students, immigrants and artists. Once a centre for student protests and activism, Northend has grown into a more mature version of this idealistic thinking. The district has a wonderfully bohemian scene of cafes, bars, art galleries and interesting little shops that are a treat to explore. Travellers looking for the funky side of Germany's financial and business capital will find it in Northend. Three of Frankfurt's largest and most popular public parks are also in this part of the city. Gunthersburgpark, Gruneburgpark and Palmengarten are all excellent places to walk, relax and mingle with locals. With two major university campuses in the district, the parks and their surrounding neighbourhoods are great places to explore the youthful side of the city. The massive Hapfriedhof, or the main cemetery, has an incredible atmosphere with many ancient grave sites. There are plenty of hotels in Northend for those who prefer to stay where the action is.
