Introduction to Frankfurt - Altstadt
The historic heart of Frankfurt, the Altstadt, dates back to the 8th century and was originally inside the old city walls. Sadly, most of its medieval and Middle Ages heritage was destroyed during WWII, although faithful reproductions have been carefully constructed over the years. The Romerburg is its central square, containing the City Hall, and the River Main flows through its half-a-square kilometres district. It’s a popular destination for tourist, with local guides showing visitors around its attractions, including the imposing cathedral. Altstadt hotels are set in the old quarter as well as the downtown district, close to attractions such as the shopping district and Frankfurt’s many museums set along the banks of the river. The old quarter draws millions of visitors annually, and contrasts with the cityscape of the commercial district, home to more avant-garde skyscrapers than most European cities. Several nearby, charming 19th century suburbs, including Bornheim, Nordend and Sachsenhausen, are off the tourist trail but well worth a visit. Visit our Frankfurt Travel Guide
