Introduction to Fehmarn, Germany
Visitors would be forgiven for being surprised that the ornithologist's paradise of Fehmarn was the site of Jimi Hendrix's final concert in 1970. This German island in the Baltic Sea is today mostly visited by water sports fans as well as bird-watchers, who take advantage of its surf spots and nature areas, the latter of which double as habitats for migratory birds. Windsurfing and kite-surfing complement regular surfing, with the best conditions in the warm months from July to September. The island's largest settlement is Burg, which has a population of 6,000, with small villages making up the island's other communities. In Burg, families can visit the aquarium, which is home to around 40 fish tanks, and stay in Fehmarn hotels. Getting here from mainland Germany by car is by way of the Fehmarn Sound Bridge, which also serves rail crossings. Ferries cross the Fehmarn Belt to the Danish island of Lolland, to the north, a journey of 45 minutes. other spellings: fehman otel, fahmarn hote, fehnarn hotle, fehmarnhotels, fehmran hotell
