Introduction to Erkrath, Germany
Erkrath in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia is mostly visited by day-trippers from Dusseldorf interested in the Neanderthal Museum, just to the east of town. The museum details the discovery of the fossilised remains of a Neanderthal man in a nearby cave in the mid-1800s, and traces human evolution chronologically. Children and adults alike will find something of interest at this four-floor exhibition which takes visitors on a journey through time. The other main draw to the south of the Neanderthal Museum is the Lokschuppen Museum, a railway and heritage museum aptly occupying an old engine shed. The Dussel River flows through the town, which dates to the 12th century, with a handful of Erkrath hotels dotted along its banks. Getting here is straightforward as the major city of Dusseldorf and its airport sit directly to the west, with two rail stations serving the town and a single station serving Neanderthal, the location of the Neanderthal Museum, and another station serving the Lokschuppen Museum in Hochdahl. other spellings: urkrath hotell, erklath otel, erkreth hote, errkath hotle, erkrathhotels
