Introduction to Erfurt - City Centre
The city of Erfurt, Germany is known as the ’green heart’ of the nation, and hotels in Erfurt city centre are popular places to stay not only for their affordability, but because Erfurt is conveniently situated in Germany’s geographical centre in the Thuringia region. Nowadays, the city remains one of Germany’s most significant transportation hubs, as it is close to two major national motorways, and is just 180kms southeast of Hannover, 100kms southwest of Leipzig, and 150kms north of Nurnberg. However, most of the city centre’s landmarks remain relatively unchanged since the city’s status as a significant trading post linking Europe to Asia’s Silk Road in medieval times. The two churches which dominate the centre’s landscape, Severikirche and Erfurt Cathedral, not only stand side by side in real life, but also on the city emblem. Climbing the wide open stairs of each church, known as domstufen, will grant visitors with unforgettable views.
