Introduction to Erfurt - Airport
The German town of Erfurt is the capital of the state of Thuringia. Thanks to the town's commercial importance in the Middle Ages, it today enjoys plenty of lovely old buildings and pretty parks. Hotels at Erfurt Airport are a little bit outside the town, but transport links are strong, making it easy to visit the town centre, tour the region or reach other destinations. There is a tram stop directly outside the airport that makes reaching the town centre, five kilometres to the east, a simple, 20-minute affair. Trams also stop at the main railway station, making onward travel very straightforward. The Bundesautobahn 71 runs just a few minutes to the west. This puts Euroroute E40 just 20 minutes to the south. The narrow, historic streets of medieval Erfurt, just 25 minutes away, can easily be explored on foot, while visiting the stunning city's pair of large churches, the 14th-century Kramerbrucke Bridge and the 11th-century synagogue, Europe's oldest, is an absolute must.
