Introduction to Dresden - Outskirts
Although much of Dresden was destroyed by bombing in WWII, many of its historic structures remained untouched, especially in the Old Town (Altstadt). However, increasing numbers of visitors are choosing to stay outside the traditional tourist areas and booking Dresden hotels on the outskirts of the city. Accommodation in the far north of the city is useful for those using Dresden Airport, around 10kms from the city centre. In addition, the eastern outskirts are convenient for visiting Pillnitz. Located around 14kms from the city centre, Pillnitz is a park and castle complex which was built in the 18th century for the former royal family. Interestingly, the castle features both Japanese and English architectural styles. Outdoor types will be keen to visit Saxon Switzerland National Park, a popular beauty spot just 30kms from the city centre. Its mountainous areas are popular with hikers, while its spectacular sandstone formations continue to amaze all.
