Donaueschingen is a picturesque town located in the far southwest of Germany. The town is most well-known as the start of the Danube Cycleway, which stretches from here as far as the Black Sea. This route takes in some of Europe's most historic cities, such as Budapest and Vienna. The town stands on the banks of two confluences which mark the start of the River Danube proper. The town's proximity to the Swiss and French borders means that it has become somewhat of a regional rail hub, offering easy access to Donaueschingen hotels. These hotels tend to be busiest during October, when the town's contemporary music festival takes place. In the town itself, visitors can see many buildings which have been built in the Art Nouveau style, a special trademark of the town. The town is a former royal seat and hosts a palace and gardens. Unfortunately, the gardens at Schlosspark are no longer open to the public. Lake Titisee is close by at just a short drive from the town centre. The lake is part of the Black Forest, one of Germany's most scenic regions.
