A convenient stop for visitors en route from Germany to Poland, Cottbus sits to the southeast of Berlin by 125kms and just to the west of the border with Poland. This city of 100,000, established in the 10th century, is hugged by the River Spree to the east. There aren't any major tourist draws in the city itself but a handful of comfortable Cottbus hotels are on hand for those passing through. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of a visit here is the Sorbian culture, with Cottbus being the epicentre of this minority. While street signs often appear in both German and Sorbian, the latter is rarely spoken. Travellers can pick up clothes and other items at the large TKC shopping centre in the city's northeast. For an escape into nature, Branitz Park on the city's outskirts has been providing respite since the late 1800s when it was established by Prince Hermann von Puckler-Muskau. The best nightlife is found near Brandenburg University of Technology in the city's north. Getting here can be achieved by autobahn or hourly trains from Berlin.
