Introduction to Cologne - South Cologne
The fourth-largest city in Germany, Cologne is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, within the massive Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Area. Set along the banks of the River Rhine, the city is a major centre for culture and the arts, with over 30 museums and an untold number of art galleries as well as regular opera, ballet and classical music events. Altstadt-Sud (Old Town South) is home to many heritage attractions and is a hub for history buffs staying in South hotels. The remains of the medieval city walls and towers cross the district, with charming streets lined with old houses and fine churches including St Mauritius, with its towering spire. One of the prettiest quarters in Altstadt-Sud is the Capitol Quarter, home to ancient archways over the streets and the church of St Maria in the Capitol. The Severin Quarter holds the imposing medieval city gate of Severinatorburg and the much-loved September festival, and the ruins of the original Roman city wall are found in Rothgerberbach.Visit our Cologne Travel Guide
