Introduction to Chemnitz, Germany
Chemnitz is a treasure trove of Soviet era monumental architecture. Brooding blobs of concrete still loom large despite the city, formerly known as Karl Marx Stadt, enjoying the biggest post reunification building and modernisation project in Germany since Berlin in the 1990s. Chemnitz hotels are either KGB style mausoleums which can be quite cool places to stay, or for those on a budget, there’s a youth hostel. A couple of international hotel chains make up the scene of Chemnitz hotels now and these can be found in the city centre. Once you’ve found the gigantic bronze head of Karl Marx, you’re right in the middle of town but you shouldn’t have any trouble venturing around as the old light rail system is very efficient and still in good working order.
