Introduction to Chemnitz - Outskirts
In the Saxony region of Germany is Chemnitz, a typical German industrial city with a strong manufacturing sector and a smattering of tourist attractions. Most of the city was bombed into rubble during WWII, so the architecture is modern. An excellent bus and train transport system provides easy access to much of the outlying area around Chemnitz, where visitors can explore the nature of the Ore Mountains and check out the few remnants of the city's historic past. The free Botanical Gardens is a good place to start, as it's just on the edge of town and features 10 different kinds of woodland. Further outside of Chemnitz one can visit several castles such as Augustusburg Castle and Kreibstein Castle, both open to the public. The Medieval Adventure Castle is focused more on fun than heritage, offering lots of interesting exhibits and activities for kids. Chemnitz hotels in the outskirts of the city are often historic inns with great character and quiet settings.
