Buhl is a German city located in the far southwest of the country, near the French border. It is located between the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest, where a large number of the city's 30,000 residents are employed by the Karlsruhe region's heavy industries. Tourism is very much secondary to the local economy, but the city attracts a number of visitors keen on sampling food and drink at its excellent restaurants. Buhl offers superb connections to the surrounding suburbs and villages which are considered part of the wider metropolitan area. These villages will interest wine lovers as several local vineyards are open to visitors. Affental village, in Eisental, is home to the well-known Affentaler wine. The main wine-growing village is Altschweier, a couple of miles' drive from the city centre along a scenic road. This village is a good stopping-off point on the way to the first class hiking in the Black Forest. In the city centre, guests can get a taste of local culture at the Burgerhaus Neuer Markt, which hosts many of the city's theatrical performances. Travellers can reach Buhl hotels by flying to Baden Airpark, just six miles north of the city.
