Introduction to Berlin - Wilmersdorf
The inner city boroughs of the vast conurbation of Berlin include Wilmersdorf, an affluent and attractive residential district mainly developed since the 1850s. Its main claims to local fame are four churches and a theatre. Kirche am Hohenzolloemplatz, built in 1933; the 1926 Ahmadiyya Mosque; the 1938 Russian Orthodox Cathedral; the 1897 Catholic St Ludwig’s Church; and the Art Deco Schaubuhne Theatre are all here. A selection of shops, restaurants and Wilmersdorf hotels complete the picture. Its redeeming features are that it’s close to old West Berlin’s Charlottenburg district, with its grand Schloss Charlottenburg and upmarket shopping district, and has easy access to vast Tiergarten Park in the nearby district of the same name. Also nearby is the Olympic Stadium, built by Hitler for the 1936 Olympic Games. Another reminder of Germany’s war years is the Gedachtniskirche, badly damaged in WWII bombings and now a memorial.
