Introduction to Berlin - Tiergarten
Berlin’s Tiergarten is both a huge urban park and the city’s zoo, located in the park, set in the central district. From the air, it’s a panoramic expanse of rich green, surrounded by the white-and-terracotta patterns of the buildings. On the ground, it’s the huge city’s green lungs as well as a home for many animal and bird species, both in the wild and the zoo. Once the hunting ground of local rulers, the vast wooded space was finally landscaped in the 1830s and now is home to the Reichstag, the German Chancellery and Schloss Bellevue, the residence of Germany’s president. On the eastern rim of the park is the famous Brandenburg Gate, set on the former border between East and West Germany. Outside the green oasis, the busy city roads and the noise of teeming traffic bouncing off the concrete frontages of Tiergarten hotels seems like a different world. In the park, the peace and quiet of the forests, the formal gardens, the little lakes and the canals take more than a day to explore. Visit our Berlin Travel Guide
