Berlin is an enormous city that contains many boroughs and towns, particularly within its outskirts. One such town in the southwestern reaches of the German capital is Marienfelde. Containing some 30,000 residents, the town is more renowned as an industrial and residential part of Berlin than anything else. Historically, it was famous for withholding one of the most important refugee asylum centres in the Cold War, processing the migration of millions of Germans from East to West Germany. The centre is still in operation today, but mainly services ethnic Germans moving from Russia. There isn’t much to see in the town, although there are some Marienfelde hotels available to accommodate visitors coming to the area for its industrial sector.
