Introduction to Berlin - Hohenschonhausen
The district of Hohenschonhausen is on the northeast side of the German capital city of Berlin. Until the tearing down of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the sector was a part of East Germany and the location of the ruling regime’s infamous Hohenschonhausen Prison. The prison was under the control of the STASI state security service, but is now a popular tourist destination, hosting regular tours that give an insight into the hardships and interrogations that inmates endured. The Boiler House Museum on nearby Herzbergstrasse is a unique structure with heat generators, the oldest which was built in the 1890s, housed in a lovely old building. Although not old, Taborkirche is an attractive church in the district. There are lots of bars and small restaurants here where fine German fare is served. Hohenschonhausen hotels are a good option as they offer easy accessibility to the city’s chief tourist draws, 10kms away, yet are more economical. The district is well-connected to Berlin’s public transport network, with bus and S-Bahn services on hand. Visit our Berlin Travel Guide
