Introduction to Berlin - Friedrichshain
Friedrichshain, a former Soviet sector of Berlin, is located on the east side of the city centre, on the upper banks of the River Rhine. Since the Berlin Wall was removed in 1989, the district has developed a bohemian air and is now home to some of the city’s finest pubs, clubs and cafes. There are several Friedrichshain hotels and hostels in the area. Ostbahnhof Railway Station has intercity and S-Bahn suburban services which allow visitors to get to the centre and attractions such as Museum Island easily. Boxhagener Platz and Simon Dach Strasse are the focal points of Friedrichshain. The former square hosts a busy flea market every Saturday. Outdoor street cafes are the place to relax and people-watch. After dark, the area transforms and is the preferred destination for clubbers. Karl Marx Allee is home to Stalinist edifices including the twin towers of Frankfurter Tor. The East Side Gallery was once part of the Berlin Wall and is now a highly visual monument. Volkspark Friedrichshain is a large park which contains the Fairytale Fountain and WWII ruins and monuments. Visit our Berlin Travel Guide
