Introduction to Bayreuth, Germany

Bayreuth is a large town in the Upper Franconia region of Germany. For most of the year, it is a typical university town that sees few visitors. However, for 30 days in July and August, Bayreuth hotels are packed with opera lovers desperate to see performances celebrating the music of the German composer Richard Wagner. The festival is accompanied by an annual ticket-frenzy, with waiting lists typically between five and 10 years long! During quieter times, guests are able to join tours of the Festival Theatre, regarded as one of the finest opera houses in the world. Those who are keen to learn more about the man himself should visit the Richard Wagner Museum, just one of several great museums in the town. Despite its status as a university town, Bayreuth offers fairly tame nightlife. However, guests shouldn't leave town before trying some of the local wheat beer known as Hefeweizen, regarded as one of the best in the world. The easiest way to get here is by flying to Nuremburg, from where regular trains depart for Bayreuth's main train station, less than one mile north of the town centre.
