Introduction to Bad Reichenhall, Germany

The Bavarian spa town of Bad Reichenhall is an appealing daytrip from Austria's Salzburg. The town has been attracting visitors with health complaints since therapeutic waters were discovered here in the early 19th century. Today this health resort draws travellers not just with its spas, but with its historical sights. Within the pedestrianised Old Town, alongside hotels in Bad Reichenhall, are numerous heritage buildings of interest including the ruins of Gruttenstein fortress, St Zeno Minster and Altes Kurhaus. Perhaps of the most interest in the town, however, is the 17th century salt works. Today it houses a fascinating museum that takes visitors through the traditional process of salt extraction. Further local heritage can be soaked up at Heimatmuseum, a regional history museum covering a period from the present day right back to events of the Stone Age. Surrounding the town are many wonderful natural areas where skiing, hiking and boating can be enjoyed.
