Bad Hersfeld's greatest attraction is its annual festival, or festspiele, held in the largest monastery ruins in Europe. Musical concerts are held at this special location during the festivities, when thousands of tourists descend on the city. During this time, Bad Hersfeld hotels get booked up, but for the rest of the year there are enough places to stay around the city that are affordable and provide excellent service. Apart from the festival and monastery, there are a handful of other attractions. Bad Hersfeld's most famous son, the philologist Konrad Duden, has a museum in the town dedicated to his memory, and there is a square of old buildings that date back as far as the 13th century.
