Introduction to Villeneuve sur Lot, France

Villeneuve sur Lot is a pleasant town located in southwestern France, 22kms northeast of Agen. The town is not the most beautiful in the area but it does have some attractive buildings which are worth seeing. The town centre lies between two old gateways - the Porte de Pujols and the Porte de Paris - which are easily noticeable when heading into the town. Villeneuve sur Lot is not such a popular tourism destination, which in many ways adds to its appeal. The town centre is a nice place to look around and has many local shops, with the main shopping street being Rue de Paris, which runs between the two towers. There is also a market held here every Tuesday and Saturday morning. The Lot River runs east to west through the centre of the town and Villeneuve sur Lot hotels are located on both sides. The most striking landmark in the town is Sainte Catherine Church, which was constructed with red bricks in the 19th century. Around Place La Fayette, the main square, just a couple of towers survive from the fortifications which previously surrounded this bastide town.
