Introduction to Vannes, France
Vannes is a medieval town founded in the Gulf of Morbihan at least 2,000 years ago. Its 13th century ramparts built along the port once protected the Dukes of Brittany and common residents dwelling in colourful timber-framed houses. Today, the ancient city walls are flanked by cafes facing the gulf and boutiques, creperies and 19th century lavoirs (communal washing places) within the fort. In the summer, musicians tend to fill the old village square as tourists peruse the jewellery and pottery shops lining the cobblestone streets. Saint-Pierre Cathedral has witnessed seven centuries of construction, culminating in a grand neo-Gothic basilica with 10 chapels and its original Romanesque bell tower. Musee de la Cohue is an exquisite fine arts museum close to many Vannes hotels, and an archaeological museum can be found at Chateau Gaillard. The region is famous for its Breton galettes, buckwheat flour pancakes stuffed with savoury fillings, served at any local restaurants along with fresh seafood and oysters and the quintessential French crepes for dessert.
