Strasbourg hotels line the river and spread out from Strasbourg city centre. The city is on the Ill River, which flows out into the Rhine River at the border with Germany. The city has deep roots, with the first human traces in Strasbourg having been dated to around 600,000 years ago. A key draw of the city is its sandstone Gothic cathedral which bears a famous astronomical clock. The area is stunning, with a preserved medieval cityscape that has been declared a World Heritage site. Houses in the city are often made of Rhineland timber and in the classic black and white format, which is particularly strong in the area of Petite France and also in the streets and squares that spread out from the cathedral. The city also boasts medieval churches which survived WWII. Trains and wonderful futuristically styled trams whisk visitors around the city, making a hire car unnecessary.
