Introduction to St Remy Provence, France

St Remy Provence is an elegant town at the northern foot of the Alpilles mountain range. Located within the regional natural park of the Alpillles, the area boasts many protected species of flora and fauna. Pretty narrow boulevards lined with cafes and shops will enchant visitors staying in St Remy Provence hotels. On market days, Republique Square is bustling with vendors selling gourmet products including candied fruits and local olive oil. The Museum of the Alpilles is an interesting ethnological museum housed in the Hotel Mistral de Mondragon. Van Gogh spent a year in Saint Remy at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery and asylum, where he produced 142 paintings, some of which, including the Starry Night and Wheat Field with Cypresses, were the most remarkable works of his career. At Gallery Estrin, there is a centre for interpreting the artist's works, in addition to a collection of works by the Cubist painter Albert Gleizes. The ruins of Glanum, an ancient Roman city, are located on the town's outskirts to the south. Beautiful remains of a triumphal arch, a mausoleum, temples and thermal baths give tourists an intimate portrait of Provence in ancient times.
