Some of France's finest wines are grown and produced in the valleys around Saumur, a scenic town in between the Loire and Thouet rivers. The 13th century Chateau de Saumur is the most impressive attraction in this small historic town, standing sentinel from its hilltop location right above the city centre. Two large halls are open to the public, featuring a decent collection of art and relics. Nearby is the Chateau de Beaulieu, another remarkable castle reminiscent of the nobility of this area. All of the action takes place in the centre of Saumur, where quaint shops, cafes and bars line pedestrian streets and small squares. Hotels in Saumur City Centre are equally charming, many of which are housed in old townhouses and other historic buildings.
