Introduction to Saintes, France
Saintes was first established on the left bank of the River Charente back in the 1st century. Over time, it has developed into a significant city of art and history, with a rich religious heritage and impressive Gallo-Roman, medieval and classical architecture. Saint-Pierre is the main neighbourhood on the left bank, designated as a conservation area for its historic buildings centred around the Romanesque Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, Place du Synode and Place du Marche. A Roman ampitheatre can be found in Arenes Park, near the basilica of Saint-Eutrope. Close by, there are remnants of an aqueduct from the thermae bathing facility of Saint-Saloine. On the right bank, the triumphal Arch of Germanicus marks the entrance to the neighbourhoud of Saint-Pallais. The Benedictine abbey of women located here has become an important centre of musical practice and research in Europe. The city has a theatre, a cinema, and three museums, one of archaeology and two displaying collections of ceramics and paintings from the last five centuries. Saintes hotels offer an opportunity to explore the elaborate history of France's western coast.
