Directly north across the gulf from Saint-Tropez, the small seaside resort of Sainte Maxime is one of the prettiest in the French Riviera. Bordered by the Massif des Maures mountains to the north, the resort and its beautiful surroundings and Mediterranean climate have attracted writers, poets and artists for the past century. The old town was historically guarded by Tour Carre, a tower that is now a museum, originally built by the monks who established the city and later restored it under Napoleon's rule.
