Introduction to Saint Emilion, France
Saint Emilion is a medieval town set against the northern hillside above the Dordogne Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is located in the largest department in France, northeast of the region's capital of Bordeaux. The sloping narrow streets give way to charming squares in this true al fresco museum. The steeple of the grand Romanesque church pierces the cityscape and can be viewed from anywhere in the city. On the town's edge, the monolithic church is one of the few found in the world, containing a massive network of underground galleries dug out of a limestone cliff. With historic vineyards originally planted by the Romans, Saint Emilion is a principal producer of red wine in the region. It boasts two wines with the prestigious ranking of Premier Grand Cru Class A, Chateau Ausone and Chateau Cheval Blanc. Saint Emilion hotels are surrounded by elegant wine shops, shaded cafes and bakeries selling macaroons made using the village's own esteemed recipe.other spellings: saint emilionhotels, st emilion otel, st emilion hotell, st.emilion hote
