In the Cote-d'Or department in eastern France, Pouilly En Auxois is a commune marking the highest point of the Canal of Burgundy, a waterway that passes beneath the town through a large vault. The canal and its 191 locks have connected the River Soane to the River Yonne since the early 19th century. Visitors can walk along the banks of the waterway, which crosses between the Rhone and the Seine rivers, or travel under the town by boat through the 3,333-metre long tunnel that took miners seven years to dig. At the end of the tunnel, there is a large port close to the city centre. Pouilly En Auxois was once a hilltop town protected by a castle belonging to the Dukes of Burgundy, but the castle was relocated to the valley of Saint Pierre in 1868. From Pouilly En Auxois hotels, tourists can visit the beautiful Notre-Dame Trouvee chapel and the curious Dove Cote, a 15th century tower containing 1,200 pigeon holes along its interior.
