Introduction to Paris - Republique
One of most central public squares in Paris is Republique, a homage to the establishment of France’s Republic, sitting on the site of the Charles V gate of the temple in the wall. It’s a place to meet and move on, facilitated by a metro station of the same name, located directly below the square. Like most squares in Paris, there is a stately monument in the centre - in this case of the female muse of modern France - and rows of austere, stone buildings around the perimeter. Some of these buildings contain Republique hotels and others government offices. Nearly a dozen important streets converge at Republique, including essential urban arteries such as the Boulevard du Temple and the Boulevard de Magenta. There isn’t really much to see at the square itself, as this spot is geared more towards transportation than sidewalk cafe lingering. But the colourful Marais Quarter is just next door for a dose of Parisian culture. Museums devoted to Picasso and Carnavalet are also just a short walk from the square. Visit our Paris Travel Guide
