Though the romantic city of Paris contains many fine green spaces, the French capital’s surrounding suburbs and countryside offer a mouth-watering array of natural and expertly-crafted gardens, parks and landscaped features. Bois de Boulogne hotels put visitors at the heart of one of the most famous park areas on the western fringes of the city. The main attraction here is Bois de Boulogne park, which spans 845 hectares of land (more than twice the size of New York’s Central Park), originally laid out by Baron Haussman. A few minutes’ drive to the south lie the twin attractions of the Longchamp track for horseracing on the flat and the Auteuil course, where steeplechases are held. In the north of the park is the Jardin d’Acclimitation, which dates from 1860 and contains 20 hectares of children’s amusements, a menagerie and the Exploradome science museum. More fine scenery is just minutes away on foot on the Seine, the banks of which define this part of Paris. Transport connections are excellent, with the E5 Euroroute and ring road close by. Some two dozen metro stations serve the area to the east.
