Introduction to Paris - Bastille
One of the world’s truly great cities, Paris has long attracted huge crowds of visitors from France and around the world with its heady mix of history, arts, culture, cuisine and more. One of the most historic parts of the city, Bastille, sits at the centre of the dramatic story of democracy, as well as a modern, vibrant arts and culture scene. Though the building after which the area is named is long gone, there is much to appreciate and enjoy. Nightlife is a key attraction, and a huge number of cafes, restaurants and bars are found within a short walk of each other. The monument to the Bastille is found in the middle of the roundabout at Place de Bastille, about 15 minutes on foot to the south of most Bastille hotels. Just to the north of this monuments lie streets filled with further bars and cafes. The opera house is a short walk to the south. About 15 minutes on foot to the north, Rue Oberkampf offers many more restaurants and bistros as well as the Edith Piaf Museum, dedicated to the French singer. A few minutes on foot to the west is the Cirque d’Hiver, a 19th century building originally used as the winter home of circuses.Visit our Paris Travel Guide
