Introduction to Niort, France
Famous for its cultivation of angelica, Niort is the largest city along the Sevre Niortaise River, which shares its name with the valley in which it sits. While walking around the old city to see the Pillory, Saint-Andre Hill and the old riverside mill, it is easy to appreciate its historic charm. Roam about Wharf Regratterie and the river's islands or take a stroll through the picturesque late 19th century garden. Looking up inside the Agesci Museum, visitors will find an exquisitely detailed ceiling ceramic, the highlight of this natural history museum which is filled with antiques and old art. Donjon de Niort is a medieval castle that served as a prison during the 18th century. Today, its contains a number of museums: the ground floor holds archaeological relics from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages, a museum of chamois leather and glove-making is on the first floor, and the third floor holds a sizeable collection of costumes, jewellery and headgear. From most Niort hotels, it is possible to see the television mast in nearby Maisonnay, which is one of the tallest constructions in France, surpassing the Eiffel Tower.other spellings: niorthotels, niort otel, nirot hotell, nirort hote, hotle in niort
