Introduction to Nimes, France
Visitors don't have to go to Rome or even Italy to experience some of the world's most spectacular Roman sites, as the French city of Nimes is jam-packed with them. Located in the department of Gard, this city has become an unsung hero in France's tourist sector. Nimes hotels offer a range of accommodation types, from budget hostels to luxurious world-renowned hotel chains. Getting to the many sites of interest is possible on foot, but bicycles, taxis, buses and car rental are also found in the city. Les Arenas is the first place visitors should see. This ancient Roman arena was built in 100 AD and is the second best preserved arena of its kind, after Rome's Coliseum, and is home to bull fighting every September. Jardine de la Fontaine is where visitors can find beautiful monuments and statues, including the Temple of Diane, relating to the city's Roman past. One of the best museums in the city is housed in Nimes Cathedral.
