The capital of the Pays de la Loire region of France, the city of Nantes is a great place to spend time. While there are plenty of attractions to be found in the city itself as well as amenities such as excellent Nantes hotels, many visitors use the outskirts of the city as a base for exploring the surrounding area. Just to the south of the city is a large and lovely lake which is known as Lac de Grand Lieu. This is a particularly popular spot with keen bird watchers, as the area is home to more than 240 different species of birds. Fishing is also a popular pastime here, while many visitors travel here simply to sit and gaze at the lake's intense natural beauty. There are also a number of villages situated on the very edge of the lake where visitors can explore and perhaps have a bite to eat before heading back to Nantes in the evening.
