Introduction to Morzine, France
The French Rhone-Alpes commune of Morzine is a traditional market town as well as a popular ski resort with modern facilities and panoramic Alpine views. Its wooded lower slopes allow for skiing even in poor weather, with the trails and town itself set at 1,000m above sea level, benefiting from Mont Blanc's microclimate. Morzine hotels aren't just busy during the ski season, as the town enjoys summer popularity as well for its golfing, caving, trekking, walking and mountain-biking activities. More visitors arrive here in summer than at any other time of year. The biking trails around Morzine are top class, attracting several recent Tour de France finishing stages with the steep Col de Joux-Plane climb. For less challenging sporting activities in winter, the ski slopes here are suitable for families and beginners, with more advanced skiers happy with the higher trails and the extensive off-piste runs. The town is not renowned for its raucous apres-ski venues, making it a great destination for serious skiers rather than party-goers on skis. However, visitors should watch out for the deceptively mild-tasting local draught beer, Muztig, as locals claim its effects mimic those of hallucinogenic mushrooms!
