Introduction to Montpellier - City Centre
In southern France lies the city of Montpellier, the capital of the region of Languedoc-Roussillon. Recently it has ranked as France’s fastest growing city. The main focal point of Montpellier is Place de la Comedie, the city square located in the centre. Within walking distance, a number of hotels in Montpellier cater to visitors to the city. The city is dotted with remarkable architecture. Main sights to see include the Musee Fabre, Saint Pierre Cathedral, Porte du Peyrou, the Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier, La Serre Amazonienne, the Antigone district and a number of chateaux built by wealthy merchants. The University of Montpellier is actually one of the world’s oldest institutions and is worth a visit. In the summer, the Festival de Radio France is held, concentrating on classical and jazz music. Opera, films, concerts and talks take place, attracting local and international attendees. Shopping is good in the city for both upscale shoppers and bargain hunters, with Centre-Ville better for the former and the Esplanade’s market stalls preferred by the latter.
