The prehistoric treasures found just outside of Montignac date back to 17,300 years ago. Throughout the Vezere Valley, discoveries have been made that reveal great insight to the early stages of man. Montignac is located in southwestern France, in the department Dordogne, the valley of which is famous for its thousands of castles. Against the backdrop of the High Pyrenees Mountains, Montignac hotels will charm anyone who stays in them. But the main attraction here is the caves of Lascaux, prehistoric dwellings that contain some of the most important Upper Palaeolithic art. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the paintings total nearly 2,000 depictions of animals, human figures and abstract signs. Though the original is closed to the public to prevent further deterioration, a reproduction of the paintings can be found within the chambers of Lascaux II, just 200 metres away.
