Mirepoix, which sits deep in southern France, close to the border with Spain, lies in the Ariege department. Though this is originally a medieval town, most of it was destroyed by flooding in the 13th century and was rebuilt shortly after. Hotels in Mirepoix provide ample access to Place de Couverts, which marks the heart of the town. The main attraction here is Maison des Consuls, which dates from the 14th century. Be sure to look up for the carved wooden timbers. Many other lovely half-timbered houses surround the square. The Gothic-styled St Maurice Cathedral is another big attraction. The huge old bishop's palace was built in the 15th century and today houses a museum. The town enjoys a well-preserved fortified gate dating from the 14th century. Chateau de Terride has an impressive history going back more than 1,000 years. The town sits just 30 minutes east of the E9 Euroroute. Pamiers, next to the E9, offers the closest railway station. The closest airport is found at Carcassonne, about 45 minutes' drive to the east.
