Introduction to Mende, France

Mende, the capital of Lozere, combines a relaxed rural atmosphere with an impressive range of amenities and attractions. The centrepiece is the stocky Gothic cathedral, which dates from the 14th century and towers high above the rest of the town. The Hermitage of St Privat, built into the rocky hills south of town, is truly stunning, and a vantage point just up the same road offers incredible views across the valley. Though these spots can be reached on foot from hotels in Mende, expect a solid walk. Be sure to budget plenty of time and energy for walking tours of the old town centre, which is beautiful and well worth exploring. The Penitents' Tower, on the eastern border of the centre, once formed part of the city ramparts. The 18th century Town Hall contains stunning religious tapestries. The 13th century Notre Dame Bridge is beautifully lit at night. The huge Cevennes National Park, which sits next door, is home to a wide range of great outdoor attractions and activities. The closest airport, Rodez-Marcillac, has only a limited range of flights. The local train station sits just across the River Lot, to the north of the town centre.
