Introduction to Marseille - Airport
A truly ancient city (people have lived in the area for some 30,000 years) and the second-biggest metropolis in France, the southern port city of Marseille has long been one of the most important destinations in Europe. The city enjoys a logistically-strong location on the Mediterranean that provides both an excellent climate and superb transport links to many regional destinations. Hotels at Marseille Airport are actually located quite a distance to the north of the city centre. Fortunately, major roadways are close by. The A7/E714 expressway, which runs just to the east, puts the downtown area only about 20 minutes away. The local railway station is only minutes away, making it easy to reach Marseille or other regional destinations. About 15 minutes to the south, the pretty 17th century Chapel of Notre Dame de Pitie is found atop a verdant hill. The old centre of Marignane contains many fine historic buildings. The community has enjoyed a tight bond with aviation since the world's first airworthy seaplane took off here in 1910.
