Lyon, one of France’s biggest urban areas, is centred around the Presqu’ile, a narrow strip of land between the Rhone and Saone rivers. The Presqu’île is home to the country’s biggest public square, Place Bellecour. In the streets leading off the square there are several excellent Presqu’ile Lyon hotels. Visitors coming to Lyon in summer can take advantage of clement weather to sit at an outdoor cafe or window shop on Rue du President Edouard Herriot. In winter the city authorities erect a Ferris wheel and set up an ice rink on the square. The Presqu’ile hotels in Lyon offer standards that range from basic through to luxury establishments housed in heritage buildings. Lyon hotels offer a fine starting point for visiting historical sights that include the Roman-era Fourviere Theatre and the Three Gauls Amphitheatre ruins, the fabulous medieval St Jean’s Cathedral and St Martin d’Ainay Basilica. Among the museums here are the Gallo-Roman museum and an excellent fine arts museum. After a day exploring, tourists in Lyon will be able to dine on what has been rated as the country’s finest gastronomy.
