Poor Luxeuil Les Bains has seen its fair share of trauma. First destroyed by Attila's Huns in 451 AD, this beautiful historic town has been sacked by Saracens, Normans, Moors and even Magyars. The famous Carolingian abbey is long gone but associated buildings remain. These include the 14th century Gothic church of Saint-Pierre, the cloisters and the conventual buildings. The historic thermal baths are located in a charming low-rise complex. Hotels in Luxeuil Les Bains make it easy to enjoy relaxed strolls to see the town's superb buildings, many of which host notable architectural features like statues, windows and arches. Maison Francois I is considered the town's prettiest house. Saint Colomban Abbey is a stunning historical structure and home to a lace-making school that is open to visitors. The beautiful Gothic Bailiff's Mansion (Maison du Bailli), located north of Saint-Pierre basilica, dates from the 15th century. The Tour des Echevins museum, located in a beautiful old building, is France's oldest museum of archaeology. The famous Thousand Lakes plateau starts to the east of town. Dijon and Mulhouse offer the closest airports. Both are easily reached by train, with the town's station located just west of the centre. The E23 Euroroute runs just outside the town.
