Introduction to Loches, France
On the left bank of the Indre River, Loches is a picturesque commune in the Loire Valley of central France. Chateau de Loches dominates the landscape, towering over the town since the rule of Henry II of England during the 12th century. The robust, commanding architecture of its towers and dungeons lends itself to the castle's versatility; its history includes periods of royal residence and multiple uses as a prison. The grounds contain the collegiate church of St Ours and the royal lodge, an addition accredited to Charles VII that marks the site where Joan of Arc met the king after her victory at Orleans. The castle is covered in white 'tufa' limestone, found in the nearby Vignemont quarry. Loches hotels stand among shops and houses that date back to the Renaissance. The home and museum of Emmanuel Lansyer, a pupil of Viollet-le-Duc and Corbet, features a gallery containing paintings by Caravaggio. A royal city filled with art and history, Loches is a perfect starting point for travellers exploring Southern Touraine.other spellings: locheshotels, loches otel, lochese hotell, loches hote, hotle in loches
