In the northwest of France, in the department of Loire-Atlantique, La Baule is a longstanding seaside resort on the Atlantic coast with the longest beach in Europe, at more than seven miles long. It's a resort that has been attracting France's high society for decades, with a legacy of elegant beach villas, a casino and luxury accommodation. The town first placed itself on the country's beach map at the end of the 19th century, when the first railway line was built along the seafront here. Today, the old iconic train station is still preserved with its beautiful wooden shuttered windows and steep tiled roof. At night, visitors here peel away from the beach and head to the town's many nightclubs and the local casino. La Baule hotels are a tourist attraction in themselves, with some occupying majestic old buildings that remain largely unchanged from the heyday of this famous resort.
