Introduction to Istres, France
The town of Istres in the south of France is famed for its beautiful sandy beaches and boasts a well-preserved old town which features a large lake that boasts the largest fountain in France. Its jet has reached a record height of 50 metres. The area has a provincial charm, and the fortified church known as Notre Dame de Beauvoir still has its 15th century original furniture and fittings. The beaches are probably the town's biggest draw and are perfect for relaxation, swimming and water-sports. There are many excellent Istres hotels scattered around the town. Possibly the best area to stay in is the old town as it has a large number of good restaurants serving French food and wines. There is plenty of entertainment in Istres, including Theatre de l'Olivier, which holds dance performances, shows and live music. There are also a number of museums in the town where visitors can discover more about the town's history and archaeology.
