Lying right on the Italian border in Alpes-Maritimes Commune, Isola 2000 is a well-situated ski resort that lies next to the picturesque Mercantour National Park, one of just nine in the whole of France. The resort is well-placed close to the Cote d'Azur, just 1 hour, 30 minutes by car from Nice and its airport. Isola 2000 was just 40 years ago a tiny depopulating village, but today it's a fully fledged winter resort with more than 70 miles of pistes of varying difficulty. At 2,000 metres above sea level, it is also one of the highest ski resorts in the country, a fact which has made it extremely reliable for snow throughout the winter season, and there are back-up snow cannons for the rare occasions when the pistes are not white. Isola 2000 hotels are fully geared towards skiing, with cosy accommodation and wooden chalet-style lodges available that are generally quiet given the subdued apres-ski here.
