No city in Provence, France lies further south or boasts as many hours of sunshine as Hyeres. This city's sheltered location which faces south provides ideal palm tree growing conditions, and the community was once the holiday resort of choice for the wealthy and famous during the 19th century. Many of the stately homes built back then remain standing to this day, and Hyeres hotels are still filled with guests all year long. The city is divided into an old section whose narrow streets and traditional homes date back to medieval times, and a more modern section whose wider avenues are lined with places to shop. Ruins from a castle named St Bernard stand on top of a park which shares its name and whose gardens rank among the nicest and quietest in this city with no shortage of green spaces. Tropical plants grow in abundance at the Ste Claire Botanical Gardens next door to the park, while the Olbius Riquier Gardens are more exotic and contain a zoo. A group of three islands, also named Hyeres, lies just 15kms away in the Mediterranean Sea.
