Situated in the Rhone-Alpes region, not far from the border with Italy, in mountainous southeastern France, Huez is a small Alpine town famous for sports tourism, both in the winter and summer. An almost permanent fixture is cycling's most celebrated event, the Tour de France. Huez is a notoriously tough and dramatic mountain stage of the competition that draws huge crowds. The route up includes commemorative plaques on some of its famous 21 hairpin bends and a fantastic view of a snow-capped peak at the top, in Huez itself. In winter, the town turns into a major ski resort, with pistes that reach more than 3,300 metres above sea level, making it a favourite for free skiers on high-altitude terrain, and for those with less experience there are a number of easy beginners' slopes, too. Huez hotels are unsurprisingly numerous given the town's prominence, particularly ski lodges for the November to April season.
